Except for this series of five prints begun in the summer of 1941 and completed in the spring of 1942, no prints were made during the Second World War due to paper shortages and other diffculties. Jacoulet spent months in research to insure the materials and patterns were authentic. The complexity of colours required multiple blocks for each print. - Jacoulet wrote the following to a potential customer: "...for each color, it requires a special block... The colors are applied by the printer with his finger...on each sheet...and each time...that is the most curious part, for each print is a separate effort... not one is identical to another... From this point of view, this series is unique in the history of the woodblock print... as much for the richness of the materials used as for the numbers of blocks for each color... La Confidente took 223 blocks (impressions)... the lemon yellow clothing was rubbed by hand at least six times...and it is the yellow made by crushing flower petals dried and ground...the hairdos of the women are printed in black lacquer... I have used yellow gold, red, green, white and silver gold, burnt leather, violet, and green-emerald, powdered pearl, mica and old powdered silver... the green screen (fan) held in front of the woman in Le Bocal de poissons rouges is entirely hand engraved minutely to give the effect of true Chinese gauze...". - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Jacoulet. - VERKAUFT / SOLD / VENDU |
